When you’ve made the decision to buy a guitar, it’s an exciting experience and a very personal thing so feel free to think outside the box. Don’t just buy the first guitar you see.
There is a check list of questions that you need to answer first, to set you on the right road to buying a guitar.
Playing guitar has been my favourite pastime since I was a teenager and I can tell you that’s a long time ago. It was my very first guitar teacher that gave me this advice and asked me these five questions when I asked him for advice on what type of guitar to buy. So listen up and learn from them. Here's the questions.
1. What type of music are you going to be playing on the guitar?
a) Blues- Advice is Electric Guitar.
b) Folk- Acoustic Guitar, Nylon or Steel String.
c) Country- Acoustic or Electric Guitar.
d) Jazz- Archtop Acoustic, Steel String Guitar.
e) Bluegrass- Lap Steel Guitar.
f) Classical- Classical Guitar.
g) Rock- Electric Guitar.
h) Metal- Electric Guitar.
2. What size of guitar-
They come in various shapes and sizes. A full size guitar scale length varies between 62.5cm and 64.5cm depending on the Brand maker. So for kids or smaller built person then probably 1/2 or 3/4 size guitar would be more comfortable. For adult or larger built person then full size, dreadnought or jumbo will be fine.
3. Where are you going to be playing-
- At Home- Can be either steel string acoustic guitar or electric but remember with electric you’ll need an amplifier and everybody at home will hear you.
- Outdoors/Camping- Inexpensive acoustic guitar.
- Live Venues/Playing in a Band- Electric guitar or Acoustic Electric, you need to amplify the sound.
4. What price-
Always buy a guitar that’s the best quality you can afford. A guitar built with a good tone-wood will always give you a rich sound, retain its value and improve with age.
5. What Brand-
It’s best to stick to popular brands like Gibson, Fender, Yamaha, Epiphone, Ibanez, Martin, Washburn or Rickenbacker, if price and circumstances allow.
My favourite place to look when I want to buy a guitar is Ebay. I’ve always found a great selection of popular brands there and I can’t ever remember being disappointed with my purchase.
Ok, so let’s have a look at what guitars are on offer on Ebay that would tick all the boxes to our five questions on buying a guitar.

Tags: best buy guitar, buy a guitar, buy acoustic guitar, buy acoustic guitars, buy bass guitar, buy cheap guitar, buy electric guitar, buy electric guitars, buy guitar, guitar to buyIf you’re seriously interested and want a Best Buy Acoustic Guitar then there are a few things you need to look out for to make sure that you buy the right guitar and get the best deal. So here are some details you need to consider.
The acoustic guitar is usually six stringed although you can also get a twelve stringed guitar. It has a sound hole, that’s the round hole in the front of the guitar body that projects the sound from the sound chamber.
Is the type of wood used to build the guitar important?
You need to look at what kind of wood this is made from because when you strike the strings on your guitar the sound board vibrates and the sound is amplified by the shape of the guitar. This soundboard which will be of a thin wood vibrates from the air inside the body of the guitar and then that enables the tiny vibrations of the strings to be heard. So you can see how the type of wood used to make the soundboard and the type of strings you use can give a different sound to the guitar.
The soundboard on good quality acoustic guitars is generally made from Spruce; it’s reasonably soft and gives a good projection of the sound. Another good alternative to Spruce is Pine. So a best buy acoustic guitar would be where the soundboard is made from either of these woods.
When it comes to the back and the sides of the guitar, the harder the wood used then the better because it will generally produce a much brighter sound. These woods are hard woods such as Rosewood, Mahogany or Maple.
What size of guitar should I get?
When considering what size of guitar to buy, just remember that a standard size guitar has a scale length of 24.5 inches (62.5cm) to 25.5 inches (64.75cm) which is generally fine for most adult players. But if you are looking to buy an acoustic guitar for a child or you kids or a smaller built person, then consider either half size or three quarter size which will be more comfortable for them to play.
Do the type of guitar strings that I use make a difference?
Again these are important to the sound that you want to produce. On an acoustic guitar they can either be nylon or steel strings, your choice. Nylon strings give a mellow tone and are mostly used when playing folk music, classical or flamenco.
Steel strings are more often used when playing blues, country rock and jazz. Steel strings tend to give a much louder and clearer sound, so think about the type of music you are going to be playing when considering what type of strings you should use.
So as a final thought I suppose you could always consider the guitar that accommodates both types, that’s the acoustic electric guitar. It looks just like an acoustic guitar but has an inbuilt pickup. This will add a little extra to the weight and cost of the guitar, but it will give you the sound of an acoustic guitar but you will be able to amplify the sound through an amplifier which of course will be an additional cost.
You will find acoustic electric guitars made by Fender, Yamaha, Epiphone, Ovation and Washburn and others.
So if you're looking for a best buy acoustic guitar then I hope this post has helped you a little to figure out what to look for.
Good luck and happy playing.
PS. I’ve always found the best selection and prices when I’ve been buying my guitars, to be on that great shopping auction site at EBay. To help you have a look at what’s on offer there, I’ve put a good selection of the best buys available there now.
Let me know how you get on.
