Bass Guitars were invented to replace the larger double bass instruments. Electric bass guitars create a stunning sound that adds a punch to any kind of music including rock, blues, jazz, country, and heavy metal.

They are a bit less impressive as an instrument from a size point of view than the traditional double basses but nevertheless they can be very flexible. They have a longer neck than a standard guitar and are tuned an octave lower in pitch and are normally plucked with the fingers and thumb, although some bass guitarist prefers to use a pick.

Bass Guitars are traditionally 4 string instruments but you can also get 5 string, 6 and 8 and even 12 string models. But I think if you are a beginner you should stick to the 4 string bass. These four strings are tuned to G, D, A and E.

If you are setting out to buy a bass guitar try and get one within your price range of course, made from a good quality wood such as maple, ash, walnut or mahogany. For comfort it’s generally recommended that a bass guitar with an 86.3cm (34inch) scale is the best choice.

Now Bass Guitars come either with the fingerboard fretted or fretless. With a fretted fingerboard you’ll have metal frets marking each half step which of course makes it much easier to play and to tune. However on the fretless fingerboard which tends to create a sound or a tone which is a bit closer to that of an acoustic bass, you will find it a bit harder to tune and to play and get an accurate tone.
